FRIENDS OF THE BANDERA EMBROIDERY ASSOCIATION
The embroidered motif is preferably carried out with rather thick and
barely twisted wool yarn of varying colours, with particular preference for nuances of
pink, savoy blue and green for geometric motifs. The main thing that characterises
"Bandera Embroidery" is the variety of stitches used. The stem stitch is used
for stems, twigs, veins in leaves and if done in parallel lines to fill-in volutes. The
chain stitch is specifically utilised to carry out the borders of volutes or
trimmings, and to fill in various size areas if done in parallel lines. For flowers, the
preferred stitches are the ones that cover larger areas where different alternating longer
and shorter coloured (shaded) stitches create a shading effect. The more refined the
technique is, the richer the depth of the shading achieved. Lastly, the french knot
stitch.
In these works, like in many others from
the same period, the embroidery is characterised by the sophistication (elegance) of the
chromatic tones (light blue and green) and the interest in the grotesque and chinoiserie,
all of which mix and mesh well with rococo trends.
